Clear Thinking Part 2: 3 Essential Steps to Becoming a Clear Thinker

Straight forward, witty and timeless. #TellItLikeItIs, is a blog for our generation

In Part 1 of our ‘Clear Thinking’ series, we explored why clear thinking matters more than ever in today’s fast-paced world. In Part 2, we move from awareness to application—outlining practical guidelines to help you begin developing clearer, more intentional thinking in everyday life. Here are 3 steps to get you out of the fog and on your way to becoming a clear thinker.

Step 1: Create Space to Observe Your Mind

Spend fifteen uninterrupted minutes in silence. No phone, music, television, or distractions—simply sit and observe.

You may be surprised by how quickly the urge to check social media, respond to messages, reach for entertainment, or mentally drift begins to surface. These impulses reveal what currently occupies your attention and competes for your focus.

Clear thinking begins with awareness. Before we can organize our thoughts, we must first recognize what is constantly pulling them in different directions. A mind that is never observed is difficult to direct.

Step 2: Tend Your Mind

Now that you’ve built awareness of your thoughts, turn that observation into a daily practice.

“Tending your mind” means maintaining that awareness throughout everyday life—not just in quiet moments, but in real-time decisions, conversations, and actions. Start with small choices, then extend it to bigger ones.

With practice, you create space between impulse and response.

Step 3: Separate Emotions, Opinions, and Facts

When something affects you emotionally, resist the urge to react immediately—especially on social media. Take time to process your raw emotion before responding.

Often, feelings shift when given space instead of being acted on in the heat of the moment.

At the same time, be careful not to treat opinions as facts, no matter how strongly they are presented or how much you want to believe them. Clear thinking requires discipline: filtering emotion and opinion from objective reality. The best decisions are grounded in concrete facts.

These three essential steps form a strong foundation for anyone beginning their journey toward clearer thinking. As you continue to grow and move forward, they will help you maintain greater mental poise, clarity, and consistency in your decision-making.
